It is a very soft mineral and rates at a 2 on the Mohs Scale therefore needs to be stored with care in its own cloth so that it doesn't get scratched.
Some people believe it is a "self-cleansing crystal" and this may be because it cannot be cleaned with water or salt or anything but a dry cloth or it will get damaged. Prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause it to lose its luster.
